Lead Manufacturing Engineer
Lead and contribute to the daily activities of assigned buyers to ensure optimum pricing of all manufactured components. Administer group cost reduction programs. Monitor quality improvement with vendors/suppliers and serve as liaison between vendors and Engineering department on new projects. Maintain positive relationship with key suppliers to maximize benefit to Freund-Vector Corporation. Drive department efficiency and drive new technologies and methodologies to push the department and company forward.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Tasks:
- Order, negotiate purchase prices and expedite delivery of assigned categories of parts and/or services.
- Source and verify new suppliers for existing parts and/or first-time purchases.
- Work with our mechanical engineers and suppliers to research and implement cost reductions and/or cost avoidances.
- Monitor supplier quality and on-time delivery and implement improvements as required.
- Initiate quotation requests for assigned categories of parts for maintenance of sales cost book.
- Get involved in the design of new equipment and major re-design of existing equipment and provide recommendations for cost effective design and manufacturing methods.
- Administer purchasing cost reduction programs to include the following areas:
- Review of existing suppliers to ensure best quality, price and delivery possible.
- Investigation of alternative sources and materials.
- Negotiation of supplier discounts.
- Supervise pricing on invoices to ensure accuracy per agreement with vendor; Approve and sign invoices as needed.
- Manage the ordering of repair parts from within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Attend and participate in weekly Production meetings.
- Assist in development of yearly budget for Material Group.
- Consult with those suppliers having difficulty meeting acceptable quality standards or on time delivery to facilitate the decision to retain or replace with another supplier.
- Provide management with reports and information as requested or deemed of interest and value to the Corporation.
- Plan and institute or recommend changes to provide for future needs and functions of the department and utilize all assigned personnel to the fullest extent possible.
- Assist with annual performance appraisals of employees within assigned area of responsibility.
Discretionary Tasks:
- Review inventory balances as needed for assigned categories of parts and supply items.
- Report on delivery status of assigned categories of parts in weekly production meeting.
- Back up personnel within the materials department in times of their absence.
- Help select and travel to domestic and international suppliers’ facilities as deemed necessary by supervising manager.
CONTACTS: The incumbent in this position makes daily contact with other non-supervisory & supervisory personnel within the company to exchange and/or interpret information and to secure their cooperation. Contacts outside the company are for the purpose of exchanging and/or interpreting information and securing cooperation in the performance of duties in the Purchasing area of the company.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education – Degree in Industrial Engineering, Purchasing Management, or equivalent work experience.
- Experience – Five years or more in a machining & sheet metal fabrication & manufacturing environment required preference on stainless steel and metal finishing knowledge.
- Special Abilities - Good phone skills required; Strong computer skills; ability to handle detailed work and high level of accuracy required; good understanding of manufacturing practices and the ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings; ability and willingness to get along with several different personalities, must be a self-starter.
- Physical Requirements – required to sit, stand & walk frequently. Occasionally required to bend, squat, reach, twist and lift or carry 10 lbs.
- Mental Requirements - Excellent organizational skills; Ability to establish priorities and yet remain flexible; Accuracy; Must be able to successfully lead/manage a team
