Reporter
Shaw Local News Network, northern Illinois’ top source for local news, is looking for a talented and competitive reporter for the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb.
We want a web-savvy reporter who breaks stories and dreams big about what our newsroom can accomplish.
As a Daily Chronicle reporter, you will step into the DeKalb city beat, covering the county’s largest community. In this beat, you’ll cover city government, breaking news, and general assignment reporting, which could mean crime and courts one day, or business the next. We want you to own this beat and make it yours while fostering source relationships and making yourself available to learn and grow in DeKalb. Some days you’ll be expected to work evenings, and there is occasional weekend work.
Our company operates seven daily newspapers and many weekly papers around the region, and we focus on having the first, best and most coverage of important local stories. Our focus is on growing our digital subscriber base. We concentrate on keeping our subscribers engaged by updating our website promptly with the day’s breaking news, while also digging deep into what matters to Illinois residents. We’re also looking for a candidate who has a proven track record of explaining to readers what’s happening and why it matters.
This is a fast-paced role that requires turning around stories quickly and accurately. Being a self-starter is not a requirement, it’s a way of life. So are organization and multitasking.
Our reporters are expected to generate their own story ideas and field assignments from editors and use analytics to determine the topics that generate the most interest from our audience. We cover the communities in our markets better than anyone and expect to expand our footprint. You will meet people, see things, and have an opportunity to use your creativity on a daily basis.
About This Opportunity:
The ideal applicant will be someone with excellent writing skills who can show our readers why the news is important to their lives. The ability to shoot photographs and videos when necessary is needed, as is an understanding of the importance of social media in serving our digital audience. The successful candidate will have a solid knowledge of AP Style and grammar. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, dependable transportation, and proof of insurance.
